John 10 – Calls
God, may I hear your voice as I read your Scripture today, amen.
Read: John 10
2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
The shepherd calls to his sheep. The job of a shepherd is to care for the flock and guide them to green pastures. Shepherds lead the flock by using their voice. The sheep hear the call of the shepherd and follow his voice. They can avoid following other people because they only know the call of the shepherd.
Jesus declares that he is the good shepherd. He calls out to you. Allow yourself some time to sit with that thought. Jesus, the Son of God, calls out to you. He wants to care for you and to guide you to green pastures. We can experience this care when we hear the call of the shepherd and follow his voice. Jesus is calling out to you. Are you listening?
Questions to Think Through
-What other voices are you tempted to follow during this season (Fear, selfishness, social media, etc.)?
-What are some practices that you can do to focus your attention on God’s voice?
-What qualities of the good shepherd stick out to you in John 10?
God, focus my mind and ear to hear your voice and the feet to follow your call. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
