John 11 – Unbinding
Opening Prayer
God, may my heart be open to hearing from you today, amen.
John 11
Main Text
43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
-John 11:43-44
Lazarus had been dead for four days. His sisters, Mary and Martha, were mourning. Then Jesus showed up. After talking with Mary and Martha, Jesus goes to the cave where Lazarus’ body laid. Once there, Jesus asked for the stone covering the cave to be moved. Then the miracle happened. Jesus calls Lazarus out of the tomb, he raises Lazarus from the dead! When Lazarus comes out of the tomb, Jesus calls the others to unbind Lazarus’ grave clothes.
The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is a great illustration of what happens to us when we put our faith in Jesus. We go from being dead in our sins to life; we experience our own resurrection! Once that glorious moment occurs, we are free from the chains of sin that bound us, we are free from our grave clothes. Clearly, it is Jesus who brings us life and the one who declares that our grave clothes no longer bind us. Jesus does call upon others to help in the unbinding process. As we grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus, we shed the grave clothes that we had been wearing. Other followers of Jesus help us unbind our grave clothes so we can live as the resurrected people Jesus has made us. Jesus has called you out of the grave and liberated you from your grave clothes. Who is helping you unbind your grave clothes?
Questions to Think Through
-Who is helping you unbind your grave clothes?
-Who are you helping unbind their grave clothes?
-How does this story shape your understanding of who Jesus is?
Closing Prayer
God, may we be a people who grow deeper in our relationship with you and help others do the same. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
