John 14 – Peace Bearer
God, open my ears to hear from you today, amen.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
World peace. It is the hope of many, but has often become the object of jokes. Will world peace ever be achieved? What do we even mean by peace? Generally, peace seems to be associated with the absence of conflict or war. Even in Jesus’ day the pax Romana, the peace of Rome, was about the lack of war with other empires.
As Jesus prepares for the cross, he tells his disciples that he is giving them his peace. It is not the peace of the world, but rather the peace of God. The peace of Jesus is not centered on the absence of war or conflict, but rather derives from the presence of Jesus. It derives from the heart of Jesus’ life, his love, and his joy. The peace is a courage, joy, and security of knowing you are loved and cared for by God through all circumstances. As Jesus gives you this peace, you get to be an agent of this peace to people you encounter. In this time filled with anxiety and stress, you are called to be an agent of peace.
Questions to Think Through
-Who in your life needs the peace of God right now?
-How can you be an agent of peace to those around you?
-What part of Jesus’ teaching in John 14 stuck out to you?
God, help me be an agent of your peace where I find my feet today, in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
