God, prepare my heart to hear from you today, amen.
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” 38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
“What is truth?” This is Pilate’s question to Jesus. Is Pilate’s question just the response of a cynical politician brushing off Jesus’ answer? On the other hand, maybe Pilate really is searching for truth and curious as to what Jesus the truth Jesus is referencing. Cynical or searching, the answer to Pilate’s question is right before him.
Jesus is the truth. Jesus says as much when he declares that ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” in John 14:6. When Jesus states that he is here to testify to the truth, he is testifying that he himself is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. In Jesus, truth and true life is found. How do you answer the question, “What is truth?”
