I AM Devotional Day 19 – Finished
God, may I encounter you today as I read your scripture, amen.
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
“It is finished.” Jesus’ last words ring from the cross as he bows his head and gives up his spirit. It is in Jesus’ statement that we see the death that Jesus has been telling his disciples about is completed. In Jesus’ last phrase from the cross we see that the Son of God gave himself up for our sins so that we may be saved from our sin. It is in Jesus’ last words that we see the love of God on display. Jesus’ great love for you leads him to the cross where he can declare that sins grip on you is finished.
Questions to Think Through
-What does it say about the character of God that Jesus would die for your sin?
-How can we reflect this type of love back into the world, especially in our current circumstances?
-What part of Jesus’ crucifixion in John 19 resonates with you?
God, allow me to feel your love.
