John 21 – Follow
God, may my heart and ears be open to receive what you have for me today, amen.
21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”
After all the miracles, the teachings, and the signs, the Gospel of John ends with the simple request of Jesus. As Jesus talks with Peter on the lakeshore after the resurrection, he extends his love to Peter despite Peter’s denial of him on the night Jesus was betrayed. It is there that Jesus gives Peter his assignment. “Follow me.” Peter is tasked with following Jesus; he is not supposed to be worrying about what Jesus has called others to do, but Peter is to follow Jesus. The assignment Jesus gives to Peter is the same task that Jesus invites us to do. Follow him. Here at the end of the gospel we see the invitation of Jesus to follow him. How will you respond to the call of Jesus to follow me?
