John 5 – Obedience
God, enable me to grow more into the person you have called me to be today. Amen.
Read John 5
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.
A couple of months ago we were having dinner one night as a family and my oldest son asked for a big boy fork. He had his own fork which was way cooler than the ones us adults use. His fork had a fun animal on it and had a nice smooth finish to it. Despite having a cooler fork, he asked to use a different fork, one that he saw his parents using. It did not matter what kind of utensil he had or how cool it was, he wanted to use the same fork as his parents.
Watching your children can be like looking into a mirror. Kids simply copy the things that you do. The relationship between God, the Father, and Jesus, the Son, looks just like this as well. Jesus only does what he sees his Father doing. The reason that Jesus knows what his Father is doing is because of God’s love for him. Disciples of Jesus, are called to become more and more like Christ. What Jesus shows us here is his obedience to following what God has shown him. Since Jesus demonstrates his willingness to be obedient to God, the Father, we need to grow in our understanding of what it means to be obedient to God as well. Following Jesus means being obedient like Jesus. What has God called you to do today? Are you willing to be obedient to God?
Questions to Think Through
-How can you be obedient to what God has called you to today?
-What does it mean for Jesus to do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing? What does that say about God?
-What sticks out to you about Jesus’ words or actions in this chapter?
God, give me the ears to hear what you have called me to do today and the strength to do it. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
