God, may your Spirit guide me in my reading of the Bible today. Amen.
Read: John 7
40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
Opinions about him varied. Some people thought he was the next major religious leader, one who would follow in the footsteps of Moses. Others thought he was the next great political leader, one who was going to rescue Israel; the one who would free them from the oppressive Roman rule. Still, several people wanted to check into his background to see if he matched up with their understanding of the coming Messiah. To others, however, he was a threat needing to be silenced. The answers are different, but they are all wrestling with who is this man Jesus.
Opinions about him still vary. To some he’s a good moral teacher. Others believe him to be one among many prophets. Several doubt his very existence. There has never been a lack of options when trying to answer the question concerning Jesus’ identity. And yet, that answer will define everything you. Your decision about what you think Jesus’ identity is will shape your own identity, how you relate to others, and how use your gifts and resources. The Bible portrays Jesus as the Son of God who came to give you new life by breaking the chains of sin through his death and resurrection. The questions must be answered by you. Who do you say Jesus is?
Questions to Think Through:
-Who do you say Jesus is?
-How has your answer impacted your life?
-How did the identity of Jesus impact his teachings in John 7?
God, thank you for your son Jesus. Open my eyes to the identity of Jesus and the impact that has on my life today. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
